The United Nations has set targets to diagnose 90% of all people with HIV by 2020. Currently, it is estimated that only 60% of people with HIV are aware of their infection. To close the gap, countries are seeking ways to rapidly increase access to and uptake of HIV testing services, particularly among populations with the lowest coverage and highest risk, who may not otherwise test. One approach is HIV self-testing (HIVST), where an individual performs a HIV diagnostic test and interprets the result in private. WHO has been working on HIVST since April 2013. In 2016, WHO released the first global guidance recommendation on HIVST, as a supplement to the “Consolidated guidelines on HIV testing services”.
