A 3-day training on HIV and HCV testing for low threshold representatives was organized in Riga, Latvia on the 15-17th November 2016 together with the Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control. The training was attended by 16 participants – primarily nurses with experience in testing and counselling of people who use drugs (PWID) via the state HIV Prevention Points (HPP) that provide much of the testing services in Latvia. The trainers were from the National Institute for Health and Welfare of Finland (THL) and from the Italian NGO “LILA Milano”. Participants learned about rapid test provision, core skills of pre- and post-counselling, and community-based voluntary counselling and testing (CBVCT) as well as about various difficult situations in test counselling such as testing minors, migrants, clients with cognitive impairments etc. In the practical sessions of the training participants practiced how to perform the rapid HIV and HCV tests. How to notify patients of test results was also trained through counsellor/client roleplays.
