Member in the Spotlight:     Positive Voice

Positive Voice is the association of people living with HIV/AIDS in Greece. We have been established in 2009 and aim to empower the people living with HIV, advocate with stakeholders, state and institutions, prevent HIV among vulnerable groups, widely combat stigma and discrimination and develop research for evidence based approaches.

All our activities came together when in April 2012 a group of female drug users were persecuted by the Greek police, based on a law issued by the former Minister of Health. They were arrested, imprisoned and mandatory tested for HIV. Personal data -including photographs- were published by the Greek Police and reproduced in the media.

From the very beginning Positive Voice, together with health associations and institutions, urged UNAIDS, Human Rights Watch and the European Commissioner for Health to take action. We have widely drawn attention for this human rights violation in Greek mass media, we discussed the negative effects of criminalization of HIV, we brought the matter to Parliament, we provided care to the prisoners and their families and we have supported a lawsuit.

All those actions finally brought the current Deputy Health Minister to ban the law on May 2013 acknowledging it publicly as a bad practice in terms of political leadership.

Positive Voice Ath checkpoint flyerAnother achievement we are proud of is Ath Checkpoint, a free HIV testing and counseling center in Athens established on November 1st 2012.  Already 1000 people have been tested during the first semester of this year!
