The Battle of Civil Society Against Reinstatement of Mandatory HIV Testing Legislation in Greece
The day after he was appointed, Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis brought back in to force health regulation 39A on July 1, 2013. The regulation forces mandatory testing for HIV and other communicable diseases. It specifies certain groups like people who inject drugs, sex workers and undocumented migrants as a priority, with the argument that this is in the interest of public safety.

Civil society campaigns for abolishment of this health provision. Greek PLWH organisation Positive Voice is an important player in this battle... >>

A Retrospective of 2012 - the AIDS Action Europe Annual Report
AIDS Action Europe has published its annual report. Core activities in 2012 centred around advocacy and policy influencing, linking & learning and network management. Some of the results we achieved in 2012 are:

Raising our voices against human rights violations
As co-chair of the EU HIV/AIDS Civil Society Forum (CSF), we brought the alarming increase in human rights violations to the EU and HIV/AIDS Think Tank agenda, like the Greek sex workers and migrants portrayed in the media as being the cause of an HIV outbreak.... >>

Member in the Spotlight:     Positive Council Switzerland

The Positive Council is a specialist organization that represents the interests of people living with HIV. This includes improving the legal situation, optimizing medical care, eliminating legal or social disadvantages and promoting scientific research.

Our organization was established three and a half years ago. Although some people initially doubted the Positive Council's legitimacy, we can now report that we are represented in all organizations relevant to people living with HIV in Switzerland. We have become an important and reliable partner when it comes to making decisions.

At the same time we endeavour to pass on our knowledge to other people living with HIV. We undertake further training in the areas of media relations, research and science, and reach a wider audience as authors of the Positiv Newsletter and Swiss Aids News.

As a result of our close collaboration with the Swiss Aids Federation and Swiss Re, in spring we finally saw that a key goal of our work is about to be achieved. A study has shown that people with HIV should no longer be excluded from taking out life insurance. We now need to ensure that the insurance companies' promises are really implemented.
